From Letter to Word to Phrase to Clause to Sentence 3

We shall continue our discussion on the different types of words.

Adjectives

If you have ever described someone or something before, the words you used are adjectives! Basically, adjectives can help you to identify the difference between two or more people or things. In other words, adjectives help you to distinguish between two or more people or things. For example:

boy — handsome boy
             brilliant boy
             young boy

From the examples above, the use of adjectives helps us to identify and distinguish among three (3) boys. One is handsome, the other is brilliant, and the last is young. The words that helped us to distinguish and identify the particular boy being referred to are adjectives. Let's consider another example.

Tosin: I like that car.
Amy: Which one?
Tosin: The red car.
Amy: I think I like the blue one.

From the conversation Tosin and Amy are talking about cars. However, they (Tosin and Amy) mentioned the kind of cars they each like. While Tosin said he likes the red car, Amy said she liked the blue car. It is the adjectives, red and blue that helped us to know the kind of cars that Tosin and Amy like.

In the conversation below, the words that help make a difference between what Dayo and Pete want are in bold typeface.

Dayo: I am okay with two loaves.
Sally: And you Pete, should I give you two loaves also?
Pete: I should take eight loaves, to start with!

Some other examples of words that can show the difference between two or more people or things are shown below.

small table             Chinese phones
big/large table       Italian suits

poor man              fat girl
rich man               slim lady

But please note that more than one adjective can be used to describe a noun. You will find more on that in the link below.

Verbs

Verbs are action words, you must have been taught in school. But how do you identify a verb in a sentence? That's very important. Verbs are used to give instructions or commands. This is very important. Let me give you examples of such words and you will add yours too.
i. go
ii. come
iii. sit
iv. pray
v. stop
vi. shake
vii. start
viii. ...................
ix. ......................
x. .......................
The spaces above are for you to provide your own examples. You can read more on verbs in the link.

Adverbs

I usually would say, adverb means "add to verb". In other words, an adverb is saying something or telling you something about the verb.  Let's take a few examples.

Walk (verb)
i. Walk slowly ...
ii. Walk over there ...
iii. Walk in the morning ...

The adverbs in the example above can be combined together thus:

Walk slowly over there in the morning.

The example clearly shows that more than one adverb can be used in a sentence. It also shows that adverbs give some details about verbs. In example (i), the detail is about manner—walk how, ......? In example (ii), the detail is about place— walk where, ......? In example (iii), the detail is about time—walk when, ......? There are other details that adverbs provide, which shall be discussed later. But don't forget that adverb means "add to verb".
