POEMS

POEM I

The instructions of a father
nailed to the heart
trail a child's steps
to guard and to guide.

POEM II

Sugar in tea rejoice
In soup recoil
Graces be known
'Cos in it lies renown

POEM III

Sugar,
Chief in every meal
Prominent in every snack
To the mouth pleasantness and sweetness
To our health injurious!

POEM IV

Sugar,
Seasoning ever sweetening.
Wrecker of our health,
Murderer of our longevity.

POEM V

Sorrow and penury thy lot
Proclaimed the Preacher
When sleep is thy bosom habit

ODE TO BLACK TROUSERS
Visible in every cupboard
Be it many or single
Adorning bodies
Never at disparity with any colour

Possession of one like a thousand
Washed on Saturday
Pressed on Sunday
Worn on Monday
Kampe on Tuesday
Standa gidigba on Wednesday
Dusted on Thursday
Active on Friday

Thou art chief among equals
Beautiful for every situation
Admired, accepted and chosen of men
A clothing of many sorrows and seasons
And acquainted with dirt and filth
Surely thou bears our dirt
And hides our filth
