It has been stated in a previous post that the first law of concord is: a singular subject will agree with a singular verb.
However, if two singular subjects are linked together by the coordinating conjunction and, the plural verb must be used.
The boy is my friend.
The girl is my friend.
The boy and the girl are my friends.
The man has a business of his own.
The woman has a business of her own.
The man and woman have businesses of their own.
In addition, if two singular compatible subjects are linked together by the coordinating conjunction and, the singular verb must be used.
