Let's start the year spelling!

A primary school pupil once boasted that he could spell. I knew he really could but I was willing to help him see that some English words could one look stupid if one isn't careful. He really didn't understand my intention so I asked him to get a sheet of paper and a pen and let's get to spell. I gave him words that are supposedly simple, which he missed. See below the list of words I asked him to spell.

1. ewe (a female sheep which is pronounced YOU)

2. draught (British spelling of DRAFT. So, it is pronounced DRAFT)

3. roar (which is pronounced RAW)

4. lewd (which can be pronounced by the guided pronunciation LUD)

5. gaol (British spelling of JAIL)

6. arch (which is pronounced like HATCH, not ARK)

7. cue (which is pronounced QUEUE)

8. plough (which is pronounced PLAHOW)

9. devout (which is pronounced DIVHOWT)

10. prophesy (which is pronounced PROFESAI)

I learnt that when the mom returned home, he challenged his mom to a spelling competition!

I must say I am sorry for posting for the first time this year rather belatedly. I have been very busy revising my books on English grammar and English sounds. I really wish to use this medium to say thank you to all our readers. More than hopeful this new year will be a fulfilling one. Happy new year.
